Watson A.I. XPRIZE
Watson A.I. XPRIZE is a $5 million,
four-year competition in which
participants are challenged to focus
on human-machine collaboration
challenges with grand societal issues.
Each year bet ween 2017 and 2019,
teams will present their ideas at
the World of Watson conference.
Three finalists will be invited to
present at TED2020, where the
audience will choose the grand winner.
The registration deadline is
January 19, 2017.
MIT Battlecode Competition
Battlecode is a 16-year old MIT
competition at the intersection
of programming and artificial
intelligence, the next event will take
place January 2017. Participants
are challenged to write the best AI
program for Battlecode, a real-time
strategy game. The prize pool for the
tournament includes $50,000. Remote
participation is allowed; you do not
need to be an MIT student.
Hackatown is a hackathon taking
place on February 4th and 5th
of next year at Polytechnique
Montreal. The competition’s theme
is smart cities, which could mean a
statistical analysis of a city’s public
transportation. The event will last for
only 24 hours, and features $4,000 in

While not acronyms per se, over time
the sharing economy developed
its own specialized jargon, which is
Microproductivity is the transformation
of a large information task into a series
of smaller microtasks for productivity
purposes. An example is jotting down
ideas while on a bus ride, and tagging
them for later use when you sit to write
the actual article.
AMT / M Turk Amazon Mechanical Turk:
An online crowdsourcing marketplace.
A part of Amazon Web Services, which
enables “Turkers” and businesses to
coordinate on human intelligence tasks
that cannot be presently fulfilled by a
computer. Turkers are the workers on
the platform who complete HITs (or,
human intelligence tasks), which can
have a pay-out any where from one cent
to a dollar per HIT.
Clickworkers are online workers
who usually perform duties within a
crowsourcing platform on a per-task pay
rate. Usual tasks include copywriting,
SEO content creation, research, tagging,
product data management, etc.
Gig Economy refers to the creation
and fulfilment of “gig jobs,” which are
temporary jobs where organization
contract independent workers for
short-term engagements, usually with
a per-task pay rate. Example platforms
are Fiverr, Uber, and Airbnb.
Cold Start is a very common term
used in the context of the gig economy
referring to the considerable length
of time an individual gig-provider
takes to establish oneself on the
platform in terms of a track record of
trustworthiness. This is primarily due to
the platform not taking responsibility of
the individual’s work ethics and quality.
SME Small and Medium-Sized
Enterprise: A type of company whose
capital and number of employees fall
within certain limits. They are much
more numerous than large companies
and corporations, and are traditionally
thought of as fostering innovation.
